This snap was taken (made?) near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, the southeast corner of Central Park in a most wonderful mist……and posted it on Facebook. It drew this comment:
How do you do that?
I replied:
I didn’t do it. I saw it, that’s all.
Now that so many of us carry cameras as part of our phones, more and more of us find ourselves in the presence of visual beauty, excitement or curiosity with astonishing frequency. Holding the camera up to such provides the opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate what we might have simply bypassed otherwise. As we become increasingly able to record not just what we see but also what we feel, wow!
Sometimes it’s the kind of beauty anyone looking in its direction can’t miss, like this one:
Sometimes it’s more personal or even mysterious, that whatever-it-is that demands we shoot:
These three snaps were made within a twelve minute period. There were ten others in the series as well. Each of those ten had it’s excitement and appeal when I pressed the shutter. They were great fun to shoot. With the closer examination of post-processing the excitement was gone making them “Fun at the time–only.”
Digital photography has removed so many of the obstacles that previously stood between the casual photographer and the photographs. No need to carry extra rolls of film, breathe chemicals or live near a drugstore. All you need–and it’s still hard for me to write this–is a phone and a free app or two and you’re set to join in.
So do so!
Have fun!

Really beautiful pictures, Richard. The way colors manifest in the mist is so surprising and, as you say, mysterious. Have a healthy and peaceful New Year. Leela

I just got around to reading your last post of 2013. So this is my reaction to your post (I couldn’t find the place to comment).
Envy–you are doing so much more with your blog than I am with mine. My goal is to post something once a month–with a picture, if possible.
More envy–I am trying to write–or re-write–a novel and I keep putting obstacles to working on it in my way (like writing this comment). You are writing short stories, while my writing group is falling apart.
Congratulations–I’m really not small-minded. I’m very happy for you, that you have found your niche and are so productive.
More congratulations–you have come to terms with your life–off with the old, on with the new, while I am still bogged down with the old.
Even more congratulations! I like your list! Good luck with that!

Dick,
If you won’t mind I should like to take your resolutions and use them in my life. You will of course be credited as the creator of them and any good fortune that befalls me because of them you are entitled to share in the royalties.

Richard, love all three Central Park pixes. The compositions are so engaging, but also there’s these stray colors in each that catch your eye. The blue and tiny yellow purse of the woman in the park, the one red light with that startling pix of Hichcockian birds (starlings?). I feel like I’ve seen these images, but didn’t have the camera or the sensitivity to capture them at that moment. Beautifully done.
